Travel Trends for 2015

As we head into another year, it’s another year that brings great travel opportunities. We did a little research to find some of the biggest travel trends for this year. Here’s what you can expect:

Peer-to-Peer Experiences

If you’re heading to Europe this year, you may discover a trend that’s growing in popularity - peer-to-peer eating. Several companies have emerged (like eatwith.com) that pair travelers with locals in order for them to experience a home-cooked meal. Other peer-to-peer websites, like AirBnB and Homestay are continuing to match travelers with home or apartment accommodations and services like Uber are transforming the world of transportation.

Asian Travel

Three of the top destinations for 2015 are in Asia. Singapore, Japan, and Thailand are said to grow in tourist popularity this year. With the Japanese yen depreciating and Thailand recovering from a coup last spring, travel will be more affordable and attainable for enthusiasts.

More Technology

As technology grows, so does its role in travel. This year, expect new travel apps, more mobile booking, hotel room keys on your iPhone, robot butlers, and location-specific alerts while traveling through airports.

Poshtels

If you’re heading to England this year, keep your eyes out for “poshtels,” or “hotel hostels.” These accommodations feature rooms at lower costs (like hostels), but with amenities similar to hotels (like restaurants, free wi-fi, and en-suite rooms).

Lower Airfares

While lower gas prices haven’t affected airline ticket pricing yet, a study done by Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation predict that prices could drop slightly (around 6%). Some first- and business-class tickets may even be comparable to economy-class prices, so if you’ve always wanted to sit in a nicer cabin, 2015 may be the year to do it.

New Ways to Pay

With the emergence of Apple Pay, other companies will begin offering their own credit card-alternative payment methods. Expect to see names like Google Wallet, PayPal, and Masterpass as payment options when you book hotel rooms, airline tickets, and more.
