Expanded Airline Service Coming to PHL

In recent press releases, Philadelphia International Airport announced that two major low-cost carriers will be expanding their presence by offering more flights.

Both Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines will begin offering services in the spring. Spirit Airlines will offer daily nonstop service from Philadelphia to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport beginning April 16th, while Frontier Airlines will offer seasonal daily nonstop service to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Houston George Bush International Airport starting April 30th.

Over the past two years, both Frontier and Spirit have been working to expand their presence in Philadelphia. Frontier’s Denver-based airline has been servicing PHL since 2004 and including the new routes, will operate nine nonstop flights from Philadelphia this year. Florida-based Spirit Airlines, on the other hand, didn’t arrive at PHL until 2013, but will expand its nonstop flights to include five destinations this year.

Other flights new to Philadelphia for 2015 include:

Spirit Airlines

  • Daily nonstop service to Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - starting June 18th

Frontier Airlines

  • Daily nonstop service to Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - starting in March
  • Daily nonstop service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport - starting in March

In one press release, PHL Airport CEO Mark Gale said, “This is great news for the traveling public in the Philadelphia region and beyond. More low-fare choices mean more competition, which is good for the consumer. We look forward to more low-fare service…to more cities from Philadelphia.”
